      Who needs Orthodontic treatment?
      • Not everyone’s teeth are perfectly aligned. In fact, many people have crooked or overcrowded or protruded teeth. You should look at your child’s smile or your smile in a mirror. If you recognize the warning signs of a bad bite or concerns in your child or yourself, you should seek an orthodontic advice.

      • Some teeth don’t meet at all
      • Baby teeth falling out too early or very late
      • The centres of the top and bottom front teeth don’t line up
      • Often biting the cheek or roof of the mouth
      • Finger sucking or tongue sucking or other oral habit continuing after 6 years of age
      • Difficulty in chewing or biting with teeth that don’t meet evenly on both sides
      • Teeth wearing unevenly
      • Jaws that shift off centre when the teeth bite together or that make sounds
      • Excessive spaces between teeth that persist after the top permanent canine teeth appear
      • Embarrassing teeth or smile often hidden by hands
      • Facial imbalance or asymmetry
      What causes crooked teeth?
      • We inherit from our parents.
      • Local factors such as finger sucking, high cavity rate, gum disease, trauma and premature loss of baby teeth can also contribute to a bad bite.
When is the best time to schedule an initial consultation?
      • Every child who has the warning signs of a bad bite should see an orthodontist or dental surgeon at an early age.
      • This could be as young as 3 or 4, but the AAO recommends an initial consultation no later than age 7.
Will additional jaw growth allow self correction of crowded teeth?
      • Usually No.
      • The space available for the front teeth does not increase after the permanent 2nd molars erupt. In most people, the space available for the front teeth decreases with increasing age.
      • Untreated orthodontic problems can become worse, and more difficult to treat as a child gets older.
What are the benefits of Orthodontic treatment?
      • AESTHETICS – Better appearance of teeth, smile and face, Improve growth in a positive manner,      Better jaw alignment & proportion
      • PSYCHOLOGICAL – Improved self-esteem, confidence, well-being and feeling of acceptance
      • DETERIORATING CONDITIONS – Correct harmful habits
      • TMJ-FUNCTION – A more even bite, Better chewing and jaw function
      • PERIODONTAL ISSUES – Easier to clean teeth
      • PREVENTION OF TRAUMA – Reduce risk of injury to protruding front teeth
Are there any risks to getting braces?
      • There are some risks, but they usually are not serious.
      • Occasionally a patient will develop an allergy to their braces.
      • There also may be a small risk of developing problems with the joint in your jaw ( T.M.J).
      • In some patients length of the root of the teeth may be shortened during this treatment.
Is there any age limit for braces ?
How long do you have to wear braces?
      • It varies, but it may take from 9 to 36 months depending a lot on you and how bad your bite is to begin with.
      • For adults, treatment may take a little longer because the facial bones have stopped growing.
If my child has early treatment often called Phase One, will additional treatment be necessary?
      • In most cases, yes.
      • After the permanent teeth have grown in, treatment is usually necessary to complete the work that was started in the earlier phase. This completion of the earlier phase using full braces is often called Phase Two.
What will happen in the time between Phase One and Phase Two?
      • This growth/observation period will involve a combination of retaining the correction that has been made in Phase One and guiding the growth of the permanent teeth into more favorable positions.
      • Because treatment timing is critical, a child’s growth and development is monitored very carefully during this period.
How can the room be saved for the permanent teeth?

Baby teeth hold room for the permanent teeth that will come in later. A lower lingual arch space maintainer can be placed when the baby canine and baby molars are getting loose or fall out prematurely. The space maintainer prevents the lower back permanent molar from slipping forward and prevents the lower front permanent incisor teeth  from tipping toward the tongue.

How can more room be made for permanent teeth?
      • Distailizing appliances
      • Headgear which applies pressure to the upper teeth and jaw
      • Lip bumper which applies pressure to the lower molar teeth and restrains lip pressure away from the lower front teeth
      • Expanders which apply sideways pressure to the teeth to widen the jaws the teeth are imbedded in.
Will you have any teeth pulled?
      • Only if your orthodontist / dentist cannot save or make enough room for all your teeth.
      • Don’t worry, if you have teeth pulled, the spaces will be closed and no one will even notice.
      Can tooth alignment change later?
      • Studies show that people’s teeth may shift as they age.
      • Once the active phase of your treatment has been finished, it will be necessary to wear a retaining brace to minimize tooth position changes of this type.
      • The length of time this has to be worn can vary.
Do I still need to see my regular dentist?
      • Yes.
      • It will be important you still have check-up every 4 – 6 months with your regular dentist throughout orthodontic treatment, so that your teeth can be checked for decay and periodontal condition can be evaluated.
Do I have to undergo any other types of treatment to complement dental and facial aesthetics?
      • Restorative dental care
      • Periodontal therapy
      • Orthognathic / jaw surgery
What do I do if my brace breaks?
      • You should ring up for an appointment as soon as is reasonably possible.
      • You should not wait for your next routine appointment as the breakage may slow your treatment.
      What are the treatment options?

The options available, and any preferences you may have for your orthodontic treatment, will be discussed with your orthodontist. The two most popular treatments include braces or Invisalign clear aligners.

      Important points
      • We use different types of braces to cater for specific orthodontic requirements, orthopaedic appliances for jaw correction and orthognathic surgical procedures where surgical correction is required.
      • The options available, and any preferences you may have for your orthodontic treatment, will be discussed with your orthodontist. The two most popular treatments include braces or Invisalign clear aligners.
